Clive Staples Lewis, or CS Lewis as he is more popularly known, was born and grew up in the Belmont / Strandtown area of east Belfast. Internationally renowned as a Christian apologist and author, Professor Lewis lectured at Oxford and Cambridge Universities but always retained close links with Ulster.
In November 1998, to commemorate the centenary of his birth, an iconic bronze sculpture was unveiled at the Holywood Arches, near the birthplace of CS Lewis. "The Searcher" depicts a man opening a 7' bronze wardrobe and is a well-known local landmark, standing at the gateway to CS Lewis Square - a new sculptural park with six 'Narnian' themed pieces relating to 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe'.
Visitors wishing to explore the world of CS Lewis have a number of tour options which can be discussed with your guide. These range from a walking tour of the Square (approximately 50 minutes) interpreting the sculptures in terms of the life of CS Lewis and the wider landscape of Ulster; to a longer walking tour which includes places where he was born and christened (approximately 90 minutes); to a vehicle-driven tour or coach tour (dependent on numbers) which extends to include the family home, a local exhibition and the CS Lewis Reading Room at Queen's University (allow half-day).
