Armagh city tour

Visit Armagh City

The name Armagh originates from the Gaelic “Ard Mhacha”, Mhacha’s height (she was a mythological warrior queen). St Patrick founded his first stone church on the Hill of Armagh in 445 AD, and it has since been recognised as the Ecclesiastical and Spiritual capital of Ireland. As well as a chequered history with raids by Vikings, Normans and wars between the English and the Irish, Armagh celebrated several golden ages, notably in the 7th and 8th century when it was home to over 7000 monastic scholars, and in the 18th century under the Primateship of Archbishop Richard Robinson. Under his reign Armagh became one of the best examples of Irish Georgian architecture on the island.
