Downpatrick Tour

Discover more about Downpatrick

Final resting place of Ireland’s Patron Saint, this tour includes a guided visit to Down Cathedral and Saint Patrick’s burial site. A large granite stone was placed over the grave in the early part of the 20th century to stop emigrants removing soil from the grave when they left Ireland! Downpatrick has been an important site from Mesolithic times and was turned into a military stronghold with the arrival of the Anglo Normans. Find out about Saint Patrick and other famous people: writers, poets, and revolutionaries like the United Irishman Thomas Russell, who was hanged at the old Gaol at the top of English Street and is buried in the Church of Ireland graveyard. Russell is the subject of the famous poem "The Man From God Knows Where".
