Final resting place of Ireland’s Patron Saint, this tour includes a guided visit to Down Cathedral and Saint Patrick’s burial site which has a large granite stone, placed over the grave in the early part of the twentieth century to stop emigrants removing soil from the grave when they left Ireland! Downpatrick has also been an ancient site from Mesolithic times, and was turned into a military stronghold with the arrival of the Anglo Normans. Find out about Saint Patrick and other famous people: writers, poets, and revolutionaries like United Irishman Thomas Russell (subject of the poem – the Man from God Knows Where) who was hanged at the old Gaol at the top of English Street and is buried in the Church of Ireland Graveyard).
